Vijayakrishnan was born to Parameswaran Pillai and Vijayamma in Thirvananthapuram, Kerala on 5th November 1952. His father was a social worker and spiritual writer. Under his influence, Vijayakrishnan started his entry on art as a writer. Short stories and novels were his initial fields. Even though he was far from phenomenon called movies in his childhood, this mysterious art form called cinema grabbed his attention. It wasn’t until college that Vijayakrishnan was free to watch movies without a pause. But unlike other movie viewers around him, he was more interested in international classics along with the local Indian movies.
Vijayakrishnan was unable to make movies of his own because of the lack of financial support and aide. Therefore, he started writing reviews, critically with all those his attained knowledge on this art form. Vijayakrishnan’s critical writings on cinema and his studies based on it made revolution in Malayalam film industry.
The Indian Film National Awards introduced the category “The Best Book on Cinema” on 1981 and the next year Vijayakrishnan won that award for his book Chalachitra Sameeksha. He also got Kerala State Awards for the same category for the next consecutive three years. Securing a place in Malayalam Cinema, Vijayakrishnan made his debut film Nidhiyude Kadha on 1986. He was once again awarded the Kerala State Award on 1991 for his book Kaalathil Kothiya Shilpangal. After making the movie Mayoora Nritam in 1995, Vijayakrishnan entered the Mini-Screen Industry. In it he made 15 TV-series, 19 tele-films and 9 documentaries.
Vijayakrishnan resumed his career in film industry by directing the movie Dalamarmarangal in 2009 and Umma in 2011. He published Shakespearum Meenkariyum a collection of short stories in 2010.
He is married to Asha and has two children, Sruti and Yadu
